No matter how many times you told yourself that you wouldn’t overdo it this year, at the end of the day, you still unbuttoned your pants (or put on your jogging pants like me) and said, “I can’t believe I ate so much”
It’s completely normal… and we’ve all done it.
But a holiday slip-up, doesn’t have to derail your entire healthy eating plan.
Here are 5 Quick ways to slim down after a holiday binge 🙂
1. Get moving
When you get up and start moving after a big meal, you always feel better. Moving after a binge is key, whether its going for a 10-minute brisk walk in the crisp winter air or going to the gym for an hour, it can make a significant difference. Usually the hardest part is just getting started. Once you begin to move, you feel great afterward. Exercising after a binge will help you feel like you are taking action and taking control of your health. Plus, it will just help you feel healthier.
2. Drink lots of water.
After consuming a few too many calories over the holidays, drinking water continuously the days after your holiday binge will not only help flush the unhealthy foods out naturally, but also reduce sodium-induced dehydration. You should be drinking at least ½ your body weight in ounces each day. Add a little lemon to your water to take it a step further.
3. Pick and choose which leftovers you keep.
The way your holiday food was prepared, should determine whether or not you should keep the leftovers. All holiday foods are not equal, For instance, mashed sweet potatoes can be super healthy, but if they were mixed with say brown sugar or mini marshmallows, then they turn into more of a dessert. So any foods that fall into the unhealthy/dessert category need to go because the truth is… if it’s in your fridge, you are more than likely going to eat it, so either give it away or toss it. As the saying goes ‘Out of sight, out of mind”.
4. Focus on portion sizes.
During our holiday meals, we tend to pile on enormous amounts of food on our plates, which leaves us feeling stuffed. By simply returning your portion sizes back to normal, your body and mind will feel better and lighter. The easiest way to determine portion sizes goes like this; a portion of meat should be around the size of the palm of your hand, your veggies should be the size of your fist, your cupped hand should determine your carbs and your thumb should represent your fats.
5. Find support.
Last but not least, remember you aren’t alone in your binge-belly pains. Find a friend and make a pact to eat better for the next week, enlist your spouse to help you make better choices, or join a group program (the 30 Day Busy Mom Slim Down starts soon). Not only can this keep you accountable, but also by surrounding yourself with people who are eating healthy, it’s automatically easier to do the same. Research shows that our eating habits subconsciously change to mirror those of the people around us.
